On the second anniversary of his bandmate's death, Styles stopped his Madison Square Garden residency to debut an unreleased song written for him

A full house came to Seventh Avenue on Friday night for a party. Somewhere in the middle of it, the man throwing the party asked them for a minute.

Harry Styles was deep into his 30-night residency at Madison Square Garden, with seven nights left. October 16 was also the second anniversary of the death of Liam Payne, his bandmate in One Direction. Before the next song, Styles told the room why the date mattered, then played something no one had heard before.

The song is called "What Is Enough." It is unreleased. Styles said he wrote it for his friend about two years ago, according to Stereogum, which reported the debut the next morning. Complex printed the title with a question mark, "What Is Enough?" Either way, the question hangs there.

What He Said

The speech was short, and it started with the building. "I feel incredibly lucky to get to play these shows here in New York, and this building means a lot to me," Styles said, as Stereogum transcribed it. Complex, in its report by Jade Gomez, has him adding that he feels "incredibly proud" when he gets "to look up there and see my name up there." He has played this arena more than 40 times now, and it shows in how he talks about it.

Then he turned. He talked about the people who have shaped his life, people he said he would not be there without.

"And two years ago today, I lost one of those friends." Harry Styles at Madison Square Garden, as reported by Stereogum and Complex

He guessed that many people in the room had been through something similar, and said he hoped they had not. "But really, it's just about looking after each other," he added. Then he asked, politely, whether it was all right to play a song he had written for his friend about two years ago.

Complex reports that he sent the crowd home with a plain instruction. "Get home safe, tell someone you love that you love them."

Two Years On

Payne died on October 16, 2024, at 31, after a fall from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires. Styles has not been quiet about him on this tour. Complex notes that at the finale of his 12-night stand at Wembley Stadium in London, Styles named all four of his former One Direction bandmates, including "my dear friend Liam," with Payne's parents, sister and nephew in the crowd.

In a March interview with Zane Lowe, Complex adds, Styles said that "the greatest way you can honor your friends who pass away is by living your life to the fullest." A sold-out arena on a Friday night is one way to take that literally.

What makes Friday different is the song itself. A name from the stage is a tribute. A new song, held back for two years and played first in New York, is something closer to a confession.

The Run So Far

The residency opened on August 26, as we reported when the Garden became his house for the fall. The shows run Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays through Halloween, with Jamie xx opening. Complex reports that New York is the only American stop on the 50-show Together, Together tour, which supports his fourth album, Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally.

Stereogum also notes that Styles was recently spotted filming around the city with John Wilson, the documentarian behind How To with John Wilson. Nobody has said what they are making. For a man who has spent two months clocking in on 33rd Street, New York is starting to look like more than a stop.

What to Know Before You Go

Seven shows remained after Friday, according to Complex. By the residency's Wednesday, Friday and Saturday pattern, those fall tonight, October 21, 23, 24, 28, 30 and the Halloween finale on October 31. Showtime has been 8 p.m. The run sold out long ago, so any seat now comes from resale, where NPR found fans paying hundreds of dollars a night and thousands for the trip.

There is no word on whether "What Is Enough" will be released, or whether he will play it again before the run ends. For now it belongs to the people who were in the room on Friday.

The residency is a party, with sequins and disco and a Halloween finale. On Friday it made room for a song about a friend, and the Garden went quiet long enough to hear it.
